Ponga

Western Five-fingered Fern

Maori name: Ponga
Common name: New Zealand Silver Fern
Botanical name: Cyathea dealbata

Ponga is found throughout New Zealand, in
forest areas. It is also known as mamuku and korau.
The pith (pulpy heart of the trunk) was used as a
poultice to treat running or seeping wounds and boils .

Young fronds were also used to treat boils.

Gum from the ponga tree was given by mouth to get worms from the intestinal tract .
